  • KNWT is the student-produced television station with original programming.
  • KZLX is a student-led radio station serving the Maryville area. 
  • The Northwest Missourian is the student-led weekly newspaper.
  • Tower yearbook is produced by students and annually documents campus life.

  • Hands-on experience your first year, with a radio station, television and/or print media, including a weekly newspaper, an online news site, a yearbook with DVD supplement and an online magazine
  • Championship-winning Speech and Debate Program, led by a National Championship caliber coaching staff
  • Faculty with real-world experience who get to know you personally
  • Alumni working as television anchors, radio morning hosts, designers at large metro dailies, prominent advertising and public relations agencies, and film production studios in Los Angeles

  • Contacts with media professionals who meet one-on-one with students to critique portfolios, participate in job shadows or just share their experiences
  • Degrees in advertising, social media management, communication (with emphasis in interpersonal communication, organizational communication, public relations, or rhetoric), digital media, mass media (with emphasis in multimedia journalism, sports media, broadcast and production, or applied advertising) and speech/theatre education
  • Scholarships and work opportunities to reward students who have excelled in their newspaper, public relations, radio, and/or television work
  • Scholarship opportunities to reward students who have excelled as members of the Speaking Bearcats, the Northwest Missouri State University Speech and Debate Team

  • BS Ed program prepares competent, qualified, and enthusiastic secondary speech and theatre teachers, meeting teacher certification standards in Missouri for grades 9-12 speech and theatre

Northwest student among 40 selected for Agriculture Future of America Ambassador program

“Northwest is helping me to become prepared for my desired career through both the School of Agricultural Sciences as well as the School of Mass Media and Communication,” Jones said. “In each, I am able to gain hands-on skills I will one day be using in my career.”

Jones is an agricultural media major from Higginsville, Missouri. At Northwest, he works as a social media specialist in the Office of University Marketing and Communication as well as with student publications. Additionally, he is active as an off-campus representative and public relations chair for Student Senate and served as concert director for Student Activities Council.

Student media outlets pick up awards at national media convention

Northwest Missouri State University Student Media received numerous accolades Oct. 26-30, 2022 at MediaFest22, a national media convention sponsored by Associated Collegiate Press (ACP), College Media Association (CMA) and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), in Washington, D.C.

KNWT Channel 8, The Northwest Missourian student newspaper and Tower yearbook were recognized with CMA Pinnacle Awards, representing the best in the nation in student media, in nine different categories, including three first-place honors.
