Parents & Families Resources

Welcome to Northwest Missouri State University! We are so happy to have you.

The transtion from high school to college can be a significant one. For many students, this is the first time they are leaving their parents/guardians and becoming more independent. This transition is an exciting one, but can bring up questions and concerns. For students with disabilities, this transition can add an additional layer of concern. It is important to identify the steps that a student must take in order to receive support at the postsecondary education level, and what the families role in that transition is.

The Accessibility and Accommodations (A&A) Office is dedicated to ensuring that your student has equal access to all NWMSU events, programs, activities, and services.

Here are some important things that parents and families should know:

  • Parents/Guardians cannot request accommodations for their student. Accommodations must be requested by the student.
  • Accommodations provided at the high school level may not be appropriate for the postsecondary level
  • Students have the responsibility to self-identify or disclose their disability to the A&A Office.
  • Students must provide the necessary documentation
  • Students must practice self-advocacy skills
  • Students at institutions of higher education are considered adults and protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Parents and families need to talk directly to their student about academic activities, disclosing disabilities, and accommodations.
