Northwest to host FBLA District Conference Feb. 8, Bond to present keynote address

High school students from throughout the region will converge Thursday, Feb. 8, at Northwest Missouri State University as it hosts the District I Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Conference.

More than 700 FBLA members and their advisors from about 30 chapters are expected to participate in workshops and competitive events related to job interviewing, social media, entrepreneurship, business ethics and impromptu speaking, among others. Students also attend leadership workshops.

The conference begins with an opening session at 8:15 a.m. at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. Northwest President Dr. Lance Tatum will welcome the students to campus, followed by an introduction of Northwest’s newly reorganized FBLA Collegiate chapter.

Stancy Bond, a Northwest senior instructor of English, will give the keynote address, titled, “Ten Things to Love.” In addition to serving as a faculty member at Northwest, she coordinates the University’s Writing Center.

A native of Mississippi, Bond has fond memories of attending an FFA campground, where she learned as a youth about leadership and how to cook. Today, she resides in Savannah, Missouri, with her children, Molly and Kit, and she enjoys cooking and exercise.

“Love and being loving is a dying art,” Bond said. “I’m going to give students reasons to prioritize love.”

Heidi Daniels, the District I lead chapter advisor from Maysville High School, is organizing the conference. Northwest campus liaisons are Cari Cline and Crystal Combs, instructors in the School of Computer Science and Information Systems, and Sarah Fellah, a graduate assistant in the School.
