Students encouraged to reduce waste Nov. 29 through Dec. 8 during biannual Big Green Move Out

Nov. 20, 2023

As the fall semester comes to an end and students head home for winter break, Northwest Missouri State University and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Nodaway County are partnering again to give students an opportunity to donate unwanted items and reduce landfill waste during the biannual Big Green Move Out.

Between Wednesday, Nov. 29, and Friday, Dec. 8, the Big Green Move Out encourages students to donate clothing, non-perishable foods, hygiene products and household items.

Collection bins will be in the lobby of each Northwest residence hall as well as at Dollar General on North Main Street or Hy-Vee, Sutherlands, Walmart or the BBBS office on South Main Street in Maryville.

A complete list of acceptable items is provided below.

Cardboard, paper, plastic, aluminum, steel, tin and glass materials may be discarded in the recycling bins at Northwest’s Recycling Center, located west of the Northwest campus on Icon Road. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Non-perishable food items may be donated at collections bins in Northwest residence halls. Donors should separate food from other items and use the appropriate bins. Donations may also be made directly to the Bearcat Food Pantry to benefit students in need.

Furniture, mattresses, mattress pads, televisions, large appliances, books, weapons or explosives, hazardous or flammable materials, and opened or expired food and hygiene products are not accepted during the Big Green Move Out.
