You're ready to spread your wings and fly and want to live off-campus. But wait, what are the next steps? How do I prepare for such a big decision? We're here to help! Follow this guideline along with tips and tricks to get you started on the right path!
When it comes to selecting a place to live, places can go fast depending on the demand for housing. You have to like a rental then stick with it. Many times, we see students want to shop around (perfectly normal) but then miss their shot at a place that's the best fit!
Avoid online scammers - don't fall for them! Even if they say they are "the real Bobby Bearcat," they probably aren't. We like to believe there aren't people in this world who will steal our money, but sadly this isn't the case. Watch out for online scammers who try to entice you with housing but instantly ask, "What's your banking information?" Wrong-O! No one should be demanding personal information like that.
Security deposits... Let's talk money. Living off-campus not only requires making monthly payments but one-time payments, as well. You will want to budget for these add-ons as they can vary. Some landlords require a full month's worth of rent as the security deposit and also expect you to pay rent for that same month. Know what you're getting into before signing that dotted line!
Renters insurance - not all landlords require renters insurance, but some do. This ensures coverage of unexpected damage to your personal belongings in a rental. It is something to consider when living in your own space.
Account activation fees - time to take ownership! Even though you're renting, you still have to set up all the essentials: water, electricity, trash, etc. Sometimes, but not always, you'll be responsible for paying activation fees when setting up your utilities. These fees will be added to your first month's bill in addition to your monthly payment.
Review your leasing agreement - We're all guilty of skimming over articles. However, take this seriously! Every contract is different, so don't get tangled in an agreement because you didn't read the fine print. Your parents/family will thank you later.
Prepare for adulthood by planning out the monthly payments you will be making. This includes rent, Wi-Fi, trash, water, electricity and all of those streaming services you love so much. Mark your calendars so that you never fall behind on bills!
Our favorite chore! What was so convenient on campus in your residential hall may be less accessible now, depending on where you live. Most rentals provide an in-house washer and dryer, whether that be in the apartment/home or a communal space. If communal, start saving your quarters now. If neither is an option for your rental, make sure to locate your nearest laundromat service!
Say goodbye to that five-minute walk to the Bearcat Commons and the luxury of eating pre-prepared meals. Groceries will now be part of your monthly expenses, so budget accordingly when making your meals!
Lace-up those walking shoes because that convenient walk to class you had from the residential hall is no more! Map out your location and time of your trip walking to and from campus, so you're not late for class. That five-minute walk may now be 15 minutes, so set your alarms accordingly!
