Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month Information & Resources

In June 1978, Rep. Horton introduced House Joint Resolution 1007 to proclaim the first ten days of May Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week, including the seventh and tenth of the month. The House passed this joint resolution, and it was then signed by the Senate and President Jimmy Carter on October 5, 1978, to become Public Law 95-419 (PDF, 158kb). In 1990, Congress passed Public Law 101-283 (PDF, 166kb), which expanded the observance to a month.

Northwest celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in April to fit within the Academic Calendar.  We invite you to honor and explore our communities' shared history of diverse backgrounds. Every person has a unique and inspiring story to tell. It offers us a valuable moment for reflection and understanding the meaningful changes we experience together.
