In his letter of May 22, 1941, to Miss DeLuce, the artist states that this and two other works being sent for consideration by the Senior Class were all "painted in the Ozarks." Nuderscher was born in 1880 in St. Louis where he lived for most of his life. In addition to easel paintings, Nuderscher's work includes murals such as "Artery of Trade" in the Missouri State Capitol and four created for the Missouri Building of the World's Fair in New York in 1939. Most of his landscapes have the lyrical quality seen in this work and seldom are without human figures.
