Born in Sweden in 1871, Sandzen studied under an impressionist painter in Stockholm and then went to Paris for further study. In 1894, at the age of 23, Sandzen came to this country to teach at Bethany College in the small Swedish community of Lindsborg, Kansas, and remained there until his death in 1954. On the reverse of the upper stretcher strip is written:"In the Hidden Valley Rocky Mountain National Park Colo;" and on the lower stretcher,"Birger Sandzen Lindsborg, Kans 1926."
In the case are two letters from the artist and an article from the September 4, 1988 issue of "Star Magazine," The Kansas City Star. Not only does this article provide insights into the work of this artist but also into his personality.
