Foliage:
Leaves opposite, 4 to 7 inches across, five lobed. Milky sap is visible when the petiole is removed from the stem.

Soil Preference:
Well Adapted to extreme soils; will withstand sand, clay, acid to calcareous soils, seems to withstand hot, dry conditions; tolerates polluted atmosphere especially those containing ozone and sulfur dioxide

Growth Habit:
Rounded, symmetrical crown, usually with very dense foliage and shallow root system which limits successful turf culture

Rate of Growth:
Medium 10 to 12' in 5 to 8 years, 30' in 20 years; 45; in 40 years; 60' in 60 years

Disease and Insect:
Verticillium wilt, anthracnose, tar spot caused serious defoliation; leaf scorch

Landscape Value:
Yellow fall color. 'Crimson King' is a well known cultivar. Its leaves are purple throughout the growing season.
