After a high school friend sang praises of Northwest, Mitchell took a campus tour and not only fell in love with the campus but was impressed by the immediate faculty interaction with students.

Dr. Brian Lanier, a retired professor of music in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, took a special interest in Mitchell and encouraged him to practice his craft in a real-life environment, learn new skills and utilize those skills in front of his peers to excel in his conducting. The size of the Northwest music program enabled Mitchell to stay involved in both the vocal and instrumental worlds and ultimately helped guide him to his passion for choir and vocal music education.

As a mid-size university, Mitchell took advantage of opportunities available to students, the attention from faculty and staff, the sense of community and the shared common goal of student success that made him career ready, day one.
