Leaves alternate, simple, 4 to 10 inches long, Lobes are wider at the top

Native Locale:
Nova Scotia to Pennsylvania, west to Manitoba and Texas

Soil Preference:
Very adaptable to various soils and is found on sandy plains to moist alluvial bottoms, limestone soils are favored; succeeds well even in dry, clay soils

Weakly pyramidal to oval in youth gradually developing a massive turn and a broad crown of stout branches; impressive as an open-grown specimen of the prairie
