Northwest falls to Missouri Southern
MARYVILLE, Mo. – A stretch that saw the Northwest Missouri State baseball team play five games in three days ended with a sour taste Saturday as the Bearcats fell to Missouri Southern 11-4 in the series finale.
Looking for offense on Saturday the Bearcats (9-21, 7-18) recorded 10 hits, however 11 men left on base spelled trouble for Northwest. Missouri Southern (19-11, 15-9) joined in on the offense power adding 17 hits and scoring 11 runs.
The Lions jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on back-to-back RBI singles. Northwest threatened in the bottom half, but MSSU worked around two lead-off singles leaving both Bearcats on base.
Northwest jumped on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Brandon Huske singled home Ryan Abernathy to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Bearcats would continue to chip away adding two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double from Paul Johnson and RBI from Eric McGlauflin making the score 7-3 in the Lions favor. Johnson was one of three Bearcats to record multiple hits on the day going 2-for-3.
MSSU responded with three more runs in the top of the seventh to push its lead to 10-3 before adding its final run in the top of the ninth.
JJ Baccari belted a lead-off homer to left field for his third of the season to give the Bearcats their last run.
Chase Anderson picked up the loss going four innings to move to 3-4 on the year. Anderson did not allow a walk and struck out three.
Northwest returns to action Wednesday as they host Washburn in a double-header at Bearcat Field. The Bearcats will look to sweep the season series after winning two in Topeka earlier in March. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
