Background Information: Dictionaries, Encyclopedias and Handbooks

Use these sources to define terms and concepts in education and locate important facts quickly. Consult encyclopedias at the beginning of a research project to obtain a concise overview of a concept, school of thought, or a particular educator's contribution to the field.

The American Heritage English as a Second Language Dictionary
This dictionary is specially designed to suit the need of intermediate of advanced English as a second language students and prepares them to use standard American dictionaries.

Encyclopedia of Associations
This is a comprehensive source of detailed information concerning 22,000 nonprofit American membership organizations of national scope. This includes organizations for education and related disciplines.

Market Data Retrieval's CIC School Directories
MDR's school directories are a comprehensive reference source for providing data on public school districts and schools, Catholic and other independent schools, and regional and county centers in all fifty states. Owens Library has MDR directories for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Ohio.

Patterson's Elementary Education
This directory includes listings for 13,000 public school districts, 63,000 public elementary schools and 13,000 private and Catholic elementary schools in the United States. It includes directory information for kindergarten schools, primary schools, intermediate schools, elementary schools, middle schools and K-12 schools.

Patterson's American Education
This directory includes entries for 11,100 public schools districts, 28,000 public secondary schools, 4,600 private and Catholic secondary schools and more than 6,000 post-secondary schools in the United States. This index is a monthly compilation of abstracts or summaries of dissertations submitted to Bell & Howell Information and Learning by more than 500 international institutions. Statistics

Use these compendiums of statistics to find education statistics about states and the nation as a whole. For links to Web versions of The Condition of Education and Digest of Education Statistics, follow the links available on Columbia University's Government Documents Ready Reference Collection.

1990 Census of Population and Housing
The Census of population and housing contains selected statistical tables on educational attainment and school enrollment. A Web-based version is available at the Census Bureau site.

The Condition of Education

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) gathers and publishes information on the status and progress of education in the United States.

County and City Data Book
This series contains United States education statistics such as educational attainment and school enrollment focusing on counties and cities.

Digest of Education Statistics

The primary purpose of the Digest is to provide a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of American education from kindergarten through graduate school.

Statistical Abstract of the United States

As the national data book, this volume contains a collection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States, including data on educational attainment and school enrollment.

Tests and Measurements

ERIC/AE Test Locator
This World Wide Web page allows you to search for citations of reviews of educational and psychological tests and measures that The Buros Institute of Mental Measurements and ProEd (book publisher) have included in their directories. In addition you can locate tests for the ETS collection with the ETS/ERIC Test file locator.

ETS Test Collection Catalog

This set includes both unpublished research instruments and commercially-available tests and questionnaires owned by the test collection of the Educational Testing Service. Search for tests available in the ETS collection by using the ETS Test File locator.

Mental Measurements Yearbook
This series contains the most extensive coverage of published standardized tests commercially available in the English-speaking world. There is a guide to the use of this set located in the Reference area. To search for tests listed in Mental Measurements Yearbook use the ERIC/AE Test Locator.

Test Critiques
This set produces one volume a year containing approximately 100 test reviews annually. The indexing is not as extensive as Mental Measurements Yearbook, and the reviews are not as descriptive. To ensure complete coverage of any one test, consult both sources. To search for tests listed in Test Critiques use the ERIC/AE Test Locator.

Tests in Print IV
This is a supplement to Mental Measurements Yearbook and serves as a comprehensive index to in-print tests covered by the first eight Mental Measurements volumes. Tests in Print I-III are also available in Reference area.
